Speech Concerns

I am in the process of having Peter screened through our school district. His speech, or lack of it, has me a little concerned. He is only able to say 4 words: mama, dada, byebye, and nigh nigh(for goodnight). Any other words he attempts to say are not always clear. For "yes" he says "ah", for "no" he says "mo". I am not concerned about him not hearing well as I am pretty sure he hears normally but I am sure that will be checked. He understands EVERYTHING and can follow multi-task instructions quite well. He is not able to repeat words that we say to him. He says alot of Ba's and Da's!

I guess I have no real experience in what is normal for speech in boys, especially when they were adopted from a foreign country. My girls all spoke early and very clearly and Ricky, well, Ricky has Down syndrome so his speech came at a typical time for kids like him. His speech is actually quite clear compared to others in his class with DS!!

Does anyone else have experience with this? Am I just over-reacting? Will his speech come eventually or will he need therapy? I'd welcome your comments!

Peyton has always had very clear speech and he has been a big talker. Has he had many ear infections?

He's never had any ear infections and seems to hear even the most quiet of noises. That's not to say he isn't hearing certain frequencies. Something we will get checked out.

We went for our 2 yr check up with the same concerns. Although Mario has more words than that, I too notice more BaBa and GaGa for things that we have clearly repeated until WE couldn't stand saying the word anymore. Please send me an email to let me know what they say. Our ped said he was fine and normal... how old is your son again?

Thanks, and you will be in my thoughts....

I'm not sure on this but please keep us posted on what you find out! I have already thought about Abbie having some speech delays.
Thanks!

What a cute blog....loved reading some of your posts tonight.
Hope you will stop by my blog. I am going to have a "card box" giveaway every month. This drawing will be the last day of April.
Every comment you leave throughout the month will enter your name in the drawing. This NEW blogger was so touched by all the comments I got on the card box, that I decided to make this a monthly GIFT...
Also, if you mention my blog telling, about the monthly giveaway, you will have your name entered 10 extra times...How is that for an incentive? I was so blown away by all the responses that I wanted to email each person personally, but TIME... just has not permitted..but I did love reading all of them..
I am continuing to introduce my family members and then there will be some fun blogs coming up from Disney World in May. I am so thankful for all my new friends.

Peyton (boy) had 45 words at 18 months...I would definitely keep an eye on it and check into getting him evaluated by First Steps...hang in there!

If he has not had ear infections then I would for sure follow up...

Both of our girls (both from Guatemala) are in speech and have been. We are receiving services through the school and now that I'm in the "recovery" stage, the speech teacher (whom I just love) goes to the preschool and sees each of them there. Our Pediatrician said they were fine but I knew they were behind in speech. With Katie, it was expressive (she had a huge vocab), with Emily, it was everything. With the right speech teacher, it makes all the difference in the world. Emily did have ear infections and tubes but Katie never had an ear infection so doesn't hurt to get them evaluated. But from my experience even if you get early intervention eval and they say fine, don't worry, still get another eval through the school at age 3 (they have to offer these free of charge). They wouldn't pick up Katie until age 3 because EEI said she had a large vocab so she was fine, NOT!!!!!!!!!! Anyway, email me more with questions.
